A first date at a coffee house became The Blue Café.
Karen and Paul met at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Their first date was at the original Blue Café, a student coffee house owned by a woman named Iris, where local bands played most evenings. When the time came to open a cafe of their own, there was never much question about what to call it or what it should feel like. The Lakewood Blue Café is a deliberate reincarnation of that room in West Lafayette: coffee, community, and live music included.
The team got us here.
When Blue Café relocated to its current spot on Madison Avenue, there were no professional movers. The baristas moved the cafe themselves, with family pitching in too. The owner puts it simply:
“It was my baristas that got me over here. It was a team effort. There weren’t movers, it was all their blood and sweat and effort.”
The owner, The Blue Café
Family, and work family.
The people behind the counter are family in more than one sense. Some are related by blood, and all of them are extended family by now. Several are working through college, others are building toward a different career, and the cafe is a stop along the way, not the destination. That’s the point: part of the job here is helping people make the connections they’ll need for whatever comes next.
The Blue Café is run by a full-time teacher who also works the floor: pouring coffee, bussing tables, restocking, and cleaning right alongside everyone else on staff. It’s part of why the cafe feels less like a business managed from a distance and more like a room somebody actually shows up for.
Want to join the family?
The Blue Café is always looking for people who care about the room as much as the coffee.
